The Ripon Sanctuary Way

2019-12-01 10:15:00 2019-12-01 16:15:00 Europe/London The Ripon Sanctuary Way

This circular walk along the Ripon Sanctuary Way is approximately 11 miles. It follows a route between stones which mark the ancient Sanctuary Boundary. In 937 AD King Athelstan granted the right of Sanctuary which meant that anyone could be granted sanctuary overnight within the boundary.

The route is generally flat and easy underfoot. We head to the cathedral and then walk along riverside paths, through nature reserves, fields and woodland, as well as a couple of urban areas, passing seven of the eight Sanctuary markers along the way.

We will meet in the St Marygate Pay & Display Car Park (nearest post code HG4 1LX) which cost £2 when we did the recce in September. The car park is a five minute walk from Ripon bus station where the number 36 from Leeds ends its journey. We intend to break for lunch after about 4 miles of walking (please bring a packed lunch as usual).

Meet at 10.00am to start the walk at 10.15am.

Bring a torch as it will be getting dark towards the end of the walk.

There will be the opportunity to visit Wetherspoons in the market place afterwards.
