This is a 4 mile circular afternoon walk from Knaresborough Castle. After pausing to take a look at the well-known view from the castle, we head down steps to Waterside which we follow towards the Half Moon Inn. We cross the River Nidd and then walk parallel to it, along Spitalcroft, before heading up through trees and crossing a field to the edge of Birkham Wood. We follow the edge of the wood to emerge at the roadside near St James Retail Park. We cross back over the River Nidd and head along Abbey Road, pausing to take a look at St Roberts Cave and a couple of other landmarks before heading back up to the castle grounds where the walk will finish.
This walk is part of a range of activities taking place in Knaresborough on the weekend 28th-29th September as part of ’Autumnfest’ organised by Renaissance Knaresborough. The walk is open to Take A Hike/Ramblers members and non-members alike. There is a list of FAQs included below specifically for non-members.
The walk is expected to take approximately 2 hours. There are plenty of pub/cafe/tearoom options in the town centre and on Waterside if you are in need of refreshments after the walk.
Please note that the UCI Road World Championships are taking place in Harrogate this weekend. Road travel will be disrupted. We recommend you use public transport to get to this walk.
Highly Recommended: Public transport… the meeting point is a 10 minute walk from Knaresborough train station and also the bus station.
By car… there are several pay and display car parks in Knaresborough. The car parks a bit further away from the castle allow you to park for longer. Watch out for restrictions. Allow plenty of time to find a space.
Important notes for non-members and Autumn Festival attendees:
What is Take A Hike?
We are a friendly local Ramblers group aimed at people aged roughly 20's to 40's. Our group is run by volunteers who arrange at least one walk every week in the Ramblers 'west riding' area which includes Harrogate/Knaresborough as well as Leeds and Bradford. It's a great way to meet people and explore the area while getting a bit of exercise and fresh air. Our focus is on enjoyment and friendship. Ramblers is Britain's walking charity which works to protect and expand the places people love to walk and promote walking for health and pleasure.
Can anyone come along to this walk?
Take A Hike welcomes Autumn Festival attendees and other non-members to attend this walk for free, in addition to the usual Take A Hike crowd. Under 18's need to be accompanied by a responsible adult. Well behaved dogs on leads are welcome. If you will be walking with us for the first time, please read all the information about this walk before deciding whether it's the right walk for you. You will be walking at your own risk.
What's the route like?
It's about 4 miles long. It is expected to take about two hours, depending on the size of the group, the weather and how many breaks we have. We will be walking on a mixture of pavements, quiet lanes, fields and uneven terrain through woodland. There are a number of ups and downs and quite a lot of steps (in the castle area).
What should I bring?
We will have a few short breaks along the route. Please bring drinks and snacks to keep you going. Sturdy footwear/walking boots are recommended but not essential. Parts of the route are notorious for being very muddy after rainfall so please bear this in mind. Bring a waterproof coat and sun protection. You may find it helpful to bring your belongings in a rucksack.
How do I book a place on this walk?
There is no need to book, just turn up on the day at least 15 minutes before the start time. The walk leader will be taking a register at the start of the walk. Check this website on the day of the walk in case there are any last minute changes.
How can I find out what other walks and socials Take A Hike has planned?
You are very welcome to come along to two or three walks for free before deciding whether to join. Please follow us on facebook www.facebook.com/takeahikegroup and keep your eye on our events diary www.takeahike.org.uk/walks-socials/ to see what we are up to.
