OS maps OL21 and 288.

Disused railway & viaducts. Reservoirs, fields & woodland.

Parts of this route may be muddy. Please wear suitable footwear.

Not all of the disused railway is available to walk on. At the beginning of the walk we cross Cullingworth and Hewenden viaducts. Much of the route to Thornton is across fields (some of which are uphill). On this section we have views of Hewenden and Doe Park reservoirs. On the outskirts of Thornton we rejoin the railway and walk over the viaduct. We descend to Pinch Beck, then uphill to Thornton.

Leaving Thornton via roadside footpaths, we have a fairly steep ascent to Hill Top, where we then follow walled paths between some fields.

If this pub is open we’ll stop for a quick drink and to use their toilets. https://whatpub.com/pubs/BRA/401/rock-heifer-thornton “Depending which way you go, this pub is far out. It is beyond Moscow, Little Egypt, Jerusalem and even World’s End. The pub can only be accessed by car or by hikers.”

Much of the remaining route is on quiet roads which don’t have a footpath. There is a section along a field; and a detour from Hallas Bridge through woodland (with uneven ground and exposed tree roots) to Goit Stock waterfall. From the footbridge at Hallas Bridge there is an ascent back to Cullingworth.

Possibility of drinks after the walk. https://whatpub.com/pubs/BRA/269/george-cullingworth
