Weekends away with the group are a great way to get away and explore an area, while getting to know your fellow Take A Hike members a little bit better.

This is a weekend of coastal walking in the beautiful Whitby area in North Yorkshire. There will be a walk organised for the Saturday and the Sunday. The walks will be posted on the walks diary a bit nearer the time, the provisional ideas are listed below.

A group evening meal will be arranged for the Friday and Saturday in Whitby town centre. All you need to do is sort out your own accommodation and send the organiser an email to say you’re going.

Below is the provisional plan which is subject to change depending on the level of take up and the weather conditions etc. Maybe you would like to lead an alternative walk for the group? If so, that’s great just let the organiser know.

Day 1: Friday 17th June

Group evening meal at a restaurant/pub in Whitby. Details will be provided to everyone who signs up for the weekend away. Places for the meal must be booked in advance.

Day 2: Saturday 18th June

Walk – Whitby to Staithes (12miles) – linear (get the bus back). Shorter options may be available (for example, stopping at Runswick Bay and catching bus back from there).

Group evening meal at a restaurant/pub in Whitby. Details will be provided to everyone who signs up for the weekend away. Places for the meal must be booked in advance.

Day 3: Sunday 19th June

Walk – Whitby to Robin Hood’s Bay along the Cleveland Way – 7 miles (catch the bus back or walk back along the Cinder Track to double the mileage)

How to book your place:
At least a month before this event, when you’ve booked your accommodation, let the organiser know you are going (by email) so that you have the opportunity to be included in the meal bookings and receive confirmation of the itinerary. Please include your membership number when you book your place.

How to get there: Whitby is accessible by train or bus or car. If you plan to drive it is worth doing some research on parking options. The main car parks charge a daily fee.

Where to stay: There is a youth hostel next to Whitby Abbey which currently offers private rooms and there are B&B/Airbnb options as well as caravan/campsites in the area.

If you want to find other people to share accommodation or travel with, you can have a chat with people on walks, post a message on the TAH Facebook page, or contact the organiser who may be able to put you in touch with other people wanting to do the same.

Weekends away are available to members only. To become a member of Take A Hike you just need to join the Ramblers, please see FAQs for further information.

This event was originally due to take place in 2020. It had to be postponed due to the lockdown. In the unfortunate event that changes to government guidance/rules regarding covid-19 cause the 2022 event not to be possible, it will be cancelled.
